We had the honor to work with the MIGHTi team based out of the University of Wisconsin at Madison to design and
prototype a mealworm farm that could be easily built, deployed and operated in rural Zambia. The project was part of the Climate Quest competition in which the MIGHTi team took 1st place.
To get things going, the MIGHTi team spent time on the ground in Zambia researching the culture, environment, and available materials. With this input to the design process, we built a lightweight stacking tray system built from wood, used woven poly grain sacks, and a plastic sheeting lining. A weighted base elevated the trays off the ground to avoid dirt and moisture while improving ergonomics, and a simple screened enclosure provided protection from rain, rodents and birds. We also provided an operating plan with a daily schedule, record keeping schema, harvesting techniques, and suggestions for feed.
Below you will find instructions for building and operating the mealworm farm, as well as a simple model to estimate costs and production volumes.
